A 46-year-old Chinese women has given birth to a healthy baby boy from embryo that was frozen 16 years ago, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province, Chinanews.com reported

The women gave birth to her first child through IVF 16 years ago, and chose to freeze her remaining 18 embryos because of China’s one child policy.

China ended it’s one child policy on January 1, 2016.  The mother returned to hospital after that and expressed her desire to conceive again.

“There were a few issues to handle when she asked to unfreeze her embryos,” said Xu Yanwen, a director with the reproductive center of the hospital. “It was not easy to awaken the frozen embryos because of freezing techniques and there were also problems with her womb.”

The hospital received about 1000 request from women who were 40 years old and above to get pregnant with the help of Assisted reproductive technology.
