A new engineered
pill technology developed by Rani Therapeutics in collaboration with InCube Labs, a
multi-disciplinary life sciences R&D lab based in Silicon Valley will
replace painful injections with painless, easy to swallow pills.
Globally millions
of patients suffer from conditions that require painful injections, sometimes
twice or thrice a day. All major biologics can only currently be administered
via intramuscular or subcutaneous routes. These injections affect quality of
life, and as a result, patient compliance can also become an issue.
The ‘Rani Pill’
enables biological drugs and proteins to be taken orally which otherwise would
be destroyed in the stomach. The pills
safely deliver the drugs in intestine, where the outer coating is dissolved and
needles made of sugar are released which inject the drug in the walls of
intestines.
The pill is
made of FDA approves ingestible and injectable materials. It is currently being
tested for insulin and biologics. It works for most drugs - Including small
molecules, therapeutic peptides, proteins, antibodies and nucleotides.
The company
is currently conducting pre-clinical
studies and have shown more than 50% bioavailability.
